Those Who Do Not Want To Hear

Without going into details, the fact is that only the Green Party and the Labour Party have opposed this destructive scheme. The governing party, Fianna Fail, and the biggest 'opposition' party, Fine Gael, support it. I e-mailed as many local representatives of these two as I could find, plus non-party reps. Only 3 have responded so far, over a week on, two Fine Gael and one 'Independent' who usually supports the government. One councillor called to my door and we engaged in a genuine discussion, but without agreeing. Two returned 'message undeliverables' from a mailerdaemon.

Democracy works.

But FF and FG are as indistinguishable as the donkey and the elephant in the USA: only their chosen symbols, initials, or other signifiers are clues to their separate existences, if such there are.

The good news is this: 6,210 submissions were made to the Appeals Board. It's highly unlikely that more than a couple hundred of these are in support. So around 6,000 people have objected which, leaving aside those under 18, represents a majority of the adult population of Greystones.

The bad news is this: the minister for environment, Dick Roche, who is a deputy for the Wicklow constituency, states he cannot intervene or make any public comment. Well, he'll just have to realise that at one of his meetings with the chairperson of Bord Pleanala, where they 'discuss' outstanding issues, he will have to make it known to the chairperson that he no longer favours this project. Otherwise, his party will find that many households in Greystones will never again give him or his party a vote.
