Nuclear Power is Safe?

We have a guy here who is a passionate advocate of nuclear power as a solution to our energy needs, especially with oil prices soaring and the end of oil in sight. His name is Dr Edward Walsh, and he is, or was, president of the University of Limerick. He wants to see "a cluster" of nuclear power plants built here, in order to reach a stage comparable to France, where 80% of electricity is generated at nuclear plants. Dr Walsh says nuclear power plants are safe; more, he says nuclear plants are the safest way to generate electricity.

Dr Walsh: please take a look at this: www.pixelpress.org .

Now tell me nuclear is safe.

Click the 'Chernobyl' link on the right to see a photo-reportage by Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong. It's not reassuring.

Chernobyl was a tragedy to be sure, but it's important to note that the reason the incident happened at all was because the operators of the plant disabled the safety systems. And because of design differences between Russian and Western reactors, a replay of Chernobyl is impossible.

As for the health effects of the accident, there is considerable evidence that the accident was not as severe as initially feared.

Oh, boy. Spokesmouths for the nuclear industry twisting the facts again. "Only" 50 people died directly from radiation. Wrong! 50 too many died from immediate exposure to radiation, but thousands more died from radiation-caused diseases due to "indirect" exposure, i.e. from radioactivity in food, water, air, and so forth. Your case is a bit like saying "only" military personnel "die directly" in wars, and that the civilian death toll (100,000+ in Iraq, for example) doesn't count because it's "indirect". Try telling that to the dead.
